Culpeper County Public Schools is proud to recognize Jeremiah Swarthout as the latest recipient of the CCPS Spotlight Award for his swift and heroic actions to protect the safety of a student.
On February 17, during a lunch shift, Swarthout responded immediately when a staff member called for help because a kindergarten student began choking. Without hesitation, he performed abdominal thrusts, successfully dislodging the obstruction. He then picked up the student and ran him to the nurse’s station to ensure the child’s airway was fully clear and that he was medically stable.
Thanks to his quick thinking, calm demeanor, and decisive action under pressure, the student was safe.
Swarthout’s actions exemplify the vigilance, care, and commitment to student safety that define Culpeper County Public Schools. His ability to respond effectively in a critical moment reflects both preparedness and a deep dedication to the well-being of every child in our schools. The staff at Pearl Sample said that they were "blown away by his quick and professional action."
CCPS congratulates Jeremiah Swarthout on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for making a life-saving difference.
