This week, Culpeper County Public Schools fifth-grade students stepped back in time at Yowell Meadow Park to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
The event, sponsored by the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) with support from the Museum of Culpeper History, featured engaging learning stations exploring Virginia’s Revolutionary War history. Over thirty volunteers in period dress taught students about camp life, medicine, communications and spying, and religion during the Revolution, as well as the local contributions of the Culpeper Minute Men, patriots of color, women, and community members who supported the cause for independence. The celebration concluded with an 18th century military drill demonstration.
This event directly supports Culpeper’s fifth-grade History and Social Sciences curriculum, Culpeper History and Geography. Students not only strengthened their understanding of local history but also connected classroom learning to the real stories of courage that helped shape the nation. Through our community partnerships, Culpeper County Public Schools continues to bring history to life.
