Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS) Special Education Department proudly hosted the 19th Annual Special Games on Friday, April 25, 2025, bringing together over 300 inspiring student athletes from Culpeper, Rappahannock, and Madison counties. With the uplifting theme of “Anything is Possible,” the event stood as a powerful celebration of determination, unity, and limitless potential.

Led by CCPS Director of Special Education Bari Nixon, the event was a resounding success, exemplifying the district's ongoing commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. The Games were once again organized by CCPS Adapted Physical Education (PE) teacher Mike McCombs and Culpeper County High School's (CCHS) Principal Danny Soderholm, in partnership with Adapted PE teachers from neighboring school divisions. Behind the scenes, Christy Edwards of the CCPS Special Education Department ensured smooth logistics for the day, coordinating everything from t-shirts and food to volunteers.

The celebration took place at Blue Devil Stadium at CCHS, where joy and encouragement echoed through the stands and fields. The weather was perfect for the day with cool spring temperatures. Throughout the day , student athletes participated in a wide variety of track and field events, cheered on by teachers, families, friends, and dedicated volunteers. Their collective enthusiasm and perseverance created a warm and inspiring atmosphere that started with Eastern View High School student McKenna Le's solo performance of the National Anthem.

A T-Shirt with Heart

This year’s Special Games t-shirt wasn’t just a sharp design, it carried a powerful message that spoke straight to the heart. Featured prominently was a heart-shaped logo, created to honor the life and legacy of Bo Smith, a beloved long-time CCPS employee and dedicated supporter of the Special Games who passed away earlier this year.

Bo’s commitment to this event and its mission left an indelible mark on the CCPS community. For years, he played a pivotal role in making the Special Games the meaningful celebration it has become. The addition of the heart logo serves as a heartfelt tribute to Bo’s service—ensuring that his spirit continues to be present in every smile, every race, and every cheer heard across the stadium.

Community Comes Together

As always, the Games were supported by an outstanding team of volunteers, including CCPS School Board Members, Central Office staff, CCPS students and educators from across the three counties, who contributed their time and energy to assist with parking, serving food, and track and field activities. Their support helped ensure that every athlete had the opportunity to shine.  CCPS would also like to give special thanks to Peppers' Grill and Merchants Grocery for their donation of food for the staff and students.

More than just an athletic competition, the Special Games offered students with disabilities a platform to showcase their abilities, build confidence, and form meaningful connections. The day was filled with moments of triumph and celebration, with athletes smiling broadly as they crossed finish lines, received ribbons, and celebrated their achievements with peers and supporters.

CCPS extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who made the 19th Annual Special Games a shining example of what’s possible when communities come together to support and uplift every student—and to those who continue to inspire us, like Bo Smith, whose legacy lives on in the hearts of many.
