What began as a routine day of golf team tryouts quickly turned into a life-saving act of courage for three Eastern View High School students. On their first day of tryouts on Monday, July 27, seniors Gavin Cain and Jackson Castro, along with sophomore Andrew Tuggle, heard cries for help coming from a nearby lake. Without hesitation, the three students entered the water and rescued three people, including a young child, before emergency responders arrived. Their calm, selfless actions helped bring everyone safely to shore and have earned widespread recognition, with their story being featured by major national and international news outlets.
CCPS Superintendent Dr. Tony Brads said, "The courageous actions of these three students are a powerful reflection of the character we strive to develop in every learner. Through their quick response, compassion, and selfless commitment to helping another person, they embodied the values at the heart of our mission to prepare students to be successful, productive citizens. We commend them for their remarkable leadership and are immensely proud to call them members of the Culpeper County Public Schools family."
