student standing on stage at band concert between 2 band directors

Eastern View High School senior Michael Hernandez took center stage at the EVHS Spring Concert on Thursday, April 30, 2026, not only as a performer and conductor, but also as a composer premiering two original musical works.

Hernandez, a longtime member of the EVHS band program, composed two pieces that debuted during the annual concert. A Fallen Kingdom was performed by the Floyd T. Binns Middle School 7th and 8th Grade Band, while A Journey Through Nature, a two-movement composition, was premiered by the Eastern View High School Concert Band. Hernandez  conducted both performances himself.

Hernandez’s musical talents extend beyond the concert stage. He independently created and produced a demanding solo multi-instrument performance video project (see below).  He also formed and conducts the Culpeper Wind Ensemble, a group for students, by students.  This group includes students from both Eastern View and Culpeper County High School who wish to push the limits of their abilities through more challenging literature.  They have arranged and conducted their own rehearsals under the supervision of EVHS Band Director, Adam Roach, purchased their own music, and all that they have asked of Roach is that he sit in and play tuba.  This group also performed at the Spring Concert.

Hernandez is the son of Leobardo and Susan Hernandez. Following graduation, he plans to attend Shenandoah University to study music education and composition, with aspirations of becoming a band director and continuing his work as a composer and mentor.

During his high school career, Hernandez has composed nine original pieces, with five compositions and arrangements premiered by various ensembles. He has also consistently supported the Floyd T. Binns band program, performed in pit orchestra productions, participated in both the EVHS Concert and Marching Bands all four years, and formed multiple chamber ensembles.

His leadership roles include serving as Vice President of the Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter, President of the Band Executive Board, and Director of the Culpeper Wind Ensemble.
