For the first time in the history of the Cannonball Classic, which started in 2008, Culpeper County High School (CCHS) emerged victorious over cross-town rival Eastern View High School (EVHS). In a thrilling overtime battle, the Blue Devils defeated the Cyclones 15–14, ending EVHS’s 17-year winning streak in the annual rivalry game.
A Hard Fought Battle
The highly anticipated matchup remained scoreless deep into the first half. With only seconds left before halftime, CCHS senior Caleb Green broke through with a touchdown run, followed by an extra point by Saul Acevedo, giving CCHS a 7–0 lead and sending the Blue Devil fans into halftime with the momentum in their favor.
It was not until the fourth quarter, when the Cyclones answered with EVHS quarterback Tyler Caperton running into the end zone, followed by an extra point from Beckett Capellini, tying the game at 7–7. With 40 seconds remaining in regulation, Eastern View lined up for a 45-yard field goal attempt that could have sealed the win. But the Blue Devils’ special teams came up big, blocking the kick and forcing the game into overtime.
An Overtime for the Ages
In overtime, each team was granted a possession from the 10-yard line. EVHS had the ball first, and Devon White scored on a strong run. Beckett Capellini’s extra point gave the Cyclones a 14–7 lead.
On their turn, the Blue Devils answered quickly with a touchdown run by senior Riley Vinyard. Then came the boldest moment of the night. Instead of kicking the extra point to tie, CCHS elected to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Vinyard once again carried the ball into the end zone, clinching the 15–14 victory and cementing a place in Culpeper football history.
A Community United
Beyond the action on the field, the atmosphere in the stadium was just as unforgettable. It felt as if the entire community came out for the game, with families, alumni, students, and neighbors filling the stadium to cheer for athletes on both teams. The energy was electric, and the shared excitement reflected how special the Culpeper community truly is, rallying together to celebrate its young people and the tradition of high school football.
A New Chapter in the Rivalry
Since Eastern View High School opened in 2008, the Cannonball Classic has been the defining rivalry in Culpeper County football. Until now, EVHS had won every matchup. With this year’s win, CCHS not only broke the streak but also ignited new energy into the tradition.
This milestone victory ensures the 2025 Cannonball Classic will forever hold a special place in Culpeper sports history.
