Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS) is preparing for the construction of a new elementary school, currently referred to as “Elementary School #7” and is inviting the community to take part in a very important decision: choosing its name.

As part of the naming process, the School Board has thoughtfully considered a wide range of factors, including location, geography, topography, and historical and cultural relevance. Rather than naming the school after an individual, CCPS has chosen to focus on names inspired by geographical landmarks and natural features in the surrounding area.

This decision was made to promote inclusivity and avoid potential complications that can arise when naming public buildings after people.

By focusing on non-personal names, the division hopes to create a more inclusive and enduring identity for the school, one that reflects the landscape and spirit of the Culpeper community.

After reviewing a variety of name suggestions, the division has narrowed the options to three finalists:

  • Longview Elementary  - The low lying rolling hills of the property provide a long, expansive view of the countryside.

  • Mount Pony Elementary - Mount Pony is the most distinguishable land feature can be seen from the new school site to the south.

  • Mountain Run Elementary - Mountain Run is a small tributary of the Rappahannock River that starts and ends within the borders of Culpeper County and runs through the property of the new school.

These names were selected for their strong connection to the area’s natural features and vistas. The School Board considered a wide range of possibilities, drawing inspiration from topographical maps and prominent views from the school site.

CCPS invites members of the community to vote on their favorite of the three finalists. The winning name will become part of the school's official identity and serve as a source of pride for students, families, and the entire Culpeper community.
