In its inaugural year, members of CTEC’s HOSA chapter competed at the state leadership conference on March 11, in Williamsburg, VA. Three teams from CTEC competed in the Emergency Medical Technician competitive events category.  In an almost sweep of the event, CTEC students brought home first and second place, with the third team finishing in the top 5.

The first-place team consisted of Eastern View High School (EV) seniors Jason Manne and Rebecca Castaneda-Reyes. The second-place team consisted of EV senior Charity Payne and Culpeper County High School (CC) senior Sara Dunphy. Also placing in the top five was the team of EV seniors Lethzy Martinez-Rivera and Taylor Betanco. The EMT students were led by CTEC EMT Instructor Stephanie Corbin.

HOSA – Future Health Professionals, is a state and national organization for student interested in and preparing for health careers. According to the Virginia HOSA website, there are more than 50 chapters in Virginia.

Any chapter with an EMT program could enter a maximum of three teams in the EMT competitive events category. The first round of competition took place in mid-February where students took a proctored individual written test that consisted of basic EMT knowledge. The scores of the teams were averaged together. Only the top ten teams advanced to the practical competition that was held at the state leadership conference.

The practical competition consisted of a realistic scenario in which students were required to assess and treat a simulated patient. Scores were tallied based on a scenario score sheet that awarded points for specific and correct tasks.

The ten teams that advanced to practical competition were not announced until after the opening ceremonies of the state leadership conference on Friday, March 10. On Saturday, March 11, the three teams individually competed and the winners were announced on Sunday morning during the conference awards ceremonies.

HOSA members from across the state competed in various competitions that ranged from CPR, medical terminology, health lifestyles, medical spelling, to job seeking skills.

The state leadership conference hosted a series of leadership development activities and workshops that student participated in throughout the weekend.

Winners of the competitive events have an opportunity to compete nationally this summer in Dallas, TX at the National HOSA conference.
