Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS) Special Education Department proudly hosted the 20th Annual Special Games on Friday, April 24, 2026, welcoming student athletes from Culpeper and Madison counties for a day defined by perseverance, joy, and achievement. With the empowering theme “We Don’t Give Up, We Level Up,” the event celebrated determination, unity, and the limitless potential of every participant.

Under bright blue skies and warm sunshine, the day provided the perfect backdrop for one of CCPS’s most cherished traditions. The Games were organized by CCPS Adapted Physical Education (PE) teacher Mike McCombs in collaboration with Danny Soderholm, CCHS Principal, and Adapted PE teachers from Madison County, while Christy Edwards of the CCPS Special Education Department coordinated logistics including supplies, food and maintenance.

The Culpeper County High School (CCHS) stadium was filled with energy and encouragement as student athletes competed in a variety of track and field events. The beautiful spring weather only added to the vibrant atmosphere, with cheers echoing across the field as families, teachers, and supporters celebrated each accomplishment. The event opened with a standout solo performance of the National Anthem by Culpeper County High School student Lakesha Gray, setting an inspiring tone for the day.

CCPS Executive Director of Special Education Bari Nixon attended Special Games for a second time. “Last year, my excitement came from the anticipation of the unknown,” she said. “This year, my excitement was that of knowing how amazing the day would be, and it did not disappoint.” She added, “We were excited to have the Madison County school students join us again. It was such a special event!”

As always, the Special Games were powered by an extraordinary network of volunteers. CCPS School Board Members, Central Office staff, students, and educators contributed their time and energy to support parking, concessions, and event activities. Their dedication ensured that each athlete had the opportunity to fully participate and shine.

CCPS also extends special thanks to Peppers’ Grill and Merchants Grocery for generously donating food for students and staff, helping to make the day even more enjoyable for all involved.

More than just an athletic event, the Special Games provide a meaningful platform for students with disabilities to showcase their abilities, build confidence, and connect with others. Throughout the day, moments of triumph unfolded across the field, from determined finishes at the finish line of the track to proud smiles on the field, each accomplishment reflected the spirit of perseverance embodied in this year’s theme.

As the 20th anniversary of this beloved tradition, the 2026 Special Games served as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to support and uplift every student.
