Sycamore Park Elementary School Information
| Sycamore Park Elementary School is a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school serving approximately 560 students. The student body is economically, racially and ethnically diverse. In addition to long time Culpeper residents we have many new students from Northern Virginia and around the country. We also have children from around the world with our immigrant families representing over 15 different nations.
Sycamore Park has been through many changes since it was first opened in 1959. Originally, Sycamore Park Elementary was known as Culpeper Elementary. It served Kindergarten through third grade upon its opening. In 1990 a beautiful addition was built on to the school. The addition provided several things that had not existed before such as a clinic, separate offices for the principal, assistant principal, secretary, bookkeeper, and attendance clerk. This addition also included the gym, library and computer lab as well as classrooms which currently houses kindergarten and first grade classes.
The school’s mascot has under gone many changes. Originally the mascot was the Blue Devilette. In 1987, Chipper the Squirrel was elected school mascot by the student body. In 1997 when the upper grades were added, the mascot was changed to the current mascot, which is the Panther.
Sycamore Park currently has on roll 553 students in Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. There are 2 administrators, 43 teaching staff, 15 para educators, 3 office personnel, 1 nurse, 1 Technology Integration Specialist, 1 guidance counselor, 1 psychologist, 1 volunteer coordinator, 5 custodial staff, 2 cafeteria monitors and 7 cafeteria personnel. There are 5 resource classes that students take on a six-day rotation - art, library, music, computer lab, and physical education (twice every six days). Sycamore Park also offers after-school clubs including art, chorus, dance, and guitar for upper elementary students. Before and after daycare is also available through Culpeper County Day Care.
Sycamore Park has an up-to-date computer lab as well as a write-to-read lab. In addition, Sycamore Park has 8 mobile laptop labs containing 24 computers and wireless internet throughout the building. Each classroom is equipped with a television, DVD/VCR players, document cameras, and a projector. Telephones are also in each classroom and many other technological devices are able for instructional purposes including SmartBoards, iPads and iPods.
Sycamore Park Elementary School students take part in a variety of field trips during their elementary school experience. This includes trips to professional plays, local museums, farms and orchards, historic Jamestown & Williamsburg, Virginia, the national monuments in Washington, D.C., and the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD.
The school recognizes the achievement of students in grades 3rd through 5th each semester by holding STAR assemblies in which students receive awards for academics, behavior, effort, music, art, and physical education. We also have a “Citizenship Club” in which students are nominated by their teachers and peers if they demonstrate the traits of good citizens by being respectful to others, working hard in their classrooms, and by being responsible for their behavior.
Sycamore Park Elementary School is committed to preparing children to be responsible individuals, community partners, and world citizens. Our mission is: “to challenge all students to fulfill their potential by developing the knowledge, skills, and temperament to successfully cope with the political, cultural, and economic conditions of today and tomorrow.”
