Juan Ponce de Leon
Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer. In 1493, he sailed with Columbus on his second voyage west. In 1513, de Leon set off from what is now Puerto Rico to explore new lands for Spain. He was in search of the Fountain of Youth and new lands to conquer.

Juan Ponce de Leon

Juan Ponce de Leon's ship landed near what is now St. Augustine, Florida (the oldest city in North America). He did not find the Fountain of Youth, but found lush bushes and trees. De Leon soon left for Spain. In 1521, he returned to Florida with 200 settlers. He declared the land a colony of Spain and planned to build a city.
