General
Information: Title I is a federally-funded education program. In Culpeper, Title I funds are used to supplement reading instruction for elementary students. Schools qualify to receive these funds on the basis of economic need. Schools falling below the County's economic average qualify for the program. Three of our six elementary schools qualify for these funds. Culpeper County's Title I program serves students in Pearl Sample, Farmington and Sycamore Park Elementary Schools. Title I must supplement the reading services already provided by the locality. Two of the Title I schools are school-wide. They are Sycamore Park and Farmington. These two schools qualified for school-wide services based on their economic need, and any student within these schools benefit from Title I services. Pearl Sample is a Title I targeted-assistance school where specific students are identified for services. The school division funds a minimum of one reading resource teacher at each elementary school. Title I reading personnel are in addition to what the County provides. A. G. Richardson and Yowell Elementary are non-Title I schools, but they have locally-funded reading resource teachers who serve qualifying students. A.G. Richardson, Yowell and Pearl Sample students who participate in the reading resource programs qualify on the basis of educational need. Teachers refer students to the program using a multi-criteria selection instrument, and parents are contacted in writing regarding the referral. In targeted-assistance schools, a meeting is scheduled with the parent(s), the referring classroom teacher and the Title I/reading resource teacher. During the meeting, an individual student plan (ISP) is developed that outlines the educational needs of the students and the most appropriate method to meet those needs. Parents are asked to take an active role in this process by signing a parent partnership form. |
Learning to read is one of the most valuable skills your child will ever learn. One practice that helps children continue on the road to reading success is for parents to set aside a special time each day to read with their children. This sharing time is important because it demonstrates to your child that reading can be fun, exciting, and informative. Best of all, when parents and children read together, they have a special sharing time -- available in no other activity. This time together not only helps your child develop a positive relationship toward books, but also reinforces the important bond between parent and child. Plan to take a few moments each day to share the joy of literature with your child. "Children become readers on the laps of their parents."
