GED (General Educational Development) Program

The General Educational Development program is designed for persons who were once enrolled in school, but for various reasons, did not complete the requirements for high school graduation. 

Preparation Options

The following options are available for persons who wish to develop or refresh the skills necessary for successful completion of the GED.

GED Test Information

 The GED test battery is made up of five content area tests:

Language Arts, Writing Test
Language Arts, Reading Test
Social Studies Test
Science Test
Mathematics Test

An average score of 450 points per test and an overall score of at least 2,250 points is required to pass.  The minimum passing score for a test is 410 points; however, the total passing score must still be at least 2,250 points.  Applicants can take each test three times per calendar year.

Registration Information
Listed below are items needed to register for the GED:

Picture ID - Driver's license, passport, military ID or government-issued ID

Social Security Number -- Social security card

bullet

Cash or money order for $45.00 for first-time testers ($10 registration plus $7 per test); money order must be made payable to CCPS.

If the applicant is under the age of 18, he or she must have a Virginia GED program testing eligibility exception completed and signed by the superintendent or designee of the applicant's school district.  A parent must accompany the student for registration.

If the applicant is home instructed, he or she must provide evidence of successful completion of the full home-instruction program for high school or enroll in the ISAEP program to take the GED preparation classes.  Home-instructed students must adhere to the GED State guidelines.
