Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) The SEAP provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of the Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their educations via mentoring by laboratory personnel and participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN. SEAP provides competitive research internships to hundreds of high school students each year. High school students who have completed at least grade 9 may apply. A graduating senior may apply. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age for most laboratories. Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research. Program dates are fixed and cannot be changed. Students are expected to participate eight continuous weeks. No vacation time is allowed during these eight weeks. It is strongly recommended that students apply to laboratories that are close to their residences. No travel/relocation allowance will be provided. The stipend amount for students will be $1,500 for the eight weeks, which will be paid in two installments. Returning students will receive $1,550 for the eight weeks.

Military Service Academies The United States has five federally funded Service Academies: the Naval, Military, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine Academies. Students receive a free education in exchange for a five-year commitment to serve in the military upon graduation. Competition for an appointment to a Service Academy is stiff. Interested applicants should begin the process early. (Start the application process in the spring of your junior year of high school). In addition to normal college-entrance requirements, applicants need to pass a physical fitness test, a medical examination and secure a Congressional nomination (except for the Coast Guard Academy, which does not require a nomination). |

The 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards!
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level. The program's goals are to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Over the past 14 years, more than 260,000 young Americans have participated in the program, and nearly 90,000 of them have been officially recognized for their volunteer work.
In the United States, each program year begins in September when information and application instructions are mailed to all middle level and high schools in the 50 United States and Washington, D.C., and to the following officially designated local organizations: · YMCAs · Affiliates of HandsOn Network
Through these schools and local organizations, students are encouraged to complete an online application by November 2.
Local Honorees are selected at participating schools and organizations in November. From these winners, an independent judging organization names the top middle level and high school volunteer in each state and Washington, D.C. Results are announced in early February. Then, 10 National Honorees are chosen by a panel of prominent public figures, and announced at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., in May. |
