Juniors—11th Grade

Dear Parent,

This is an important time for the college-bound student, and not just because colleges pay close attention to junior year courses, grades, activities, and test scores. It's also a good year to become familiar with the financial aid process and start looking at colleges. In this special back-to-school issue, you'll learn about several of the many free resources we offer you and your child. Throughout the rest of the year, this newsletter will feature advice on topics ranging from preparing for the SAT(R) to searching for colleges.

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB
With thousands of colleges to choose from, your child needs help sorting through the possibilities. College Search has the latest information on more than 3,800 colleges and a wide range of search options, including location, size, and majors offered.

Don't wait until your child chooses a college to think about paying for it. Visit Financial Aid EasyPlanner and answer straightforward questions to get a feel for costs; calculate your
savings goal; and explore scholarship, aid, and loan options.

The best way to prepare for the SAT is to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT(R)). Offered in October, the test includes the types of questions found on the SAT and is a way to qualify for scholarships. Your child
will find tips and practice questions, with answers and explanations, on the College Board website.

MEET MY ORGANIZER
Students get the most out of the College Board website when they personalize their experience with a free My Organizer account. Getting started is fast and easy. Students can use the account to track their college search by building lists of favorite schools. They can also create custom calendars, check the status of activities, and get recommendations for next steps.

My Organizer is the place to sign up for email reminders and announcements -- we even notify your child the moment SAT scores can be viewed online for free. And if your child enrolls you in the "CC a Parent" email service, you'll receive copies of the emails we send.

The Junior Action Plan, another part of My Organizer, lists seasonal activities to help your child succeed in high school and prepare for college. These include everything from jump-starting the college search to scheduling college admissions tests.

Your child has an account on the College Board site and is presumably gathering information so you both can make an educated
decision about college. If your high school senior is considering taking the SAT, think about this: the SAT is the one test that
shows colleges what students know and what they know they can do. The test fills in the blanks about who they are -- how they think, problem solve and communicate -- along with how well they've learned their everyday course work.

We want to give students like yours the resources and tools to succeed. That's why when they register for the test online, they
can get free practice materials including an official SAT practice test, The Official SAT Question of the Day(TM) and the SAT In Focus(TM) tools: Skills Insight(TM) and My SAT Online Score Report. It's a great site where you and your child can go together. You'll both find lots of useful information to help ensure your child's SAT experience is a positive one.

THE DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 1. We've made the process fast and easy,
so have your child sign up today.
