What is CLC?

The primary goal of CLC is to establish a coordinated school-wide approach to improving literacy for all students that will enable students to meet higher standards.

How did we get started?

Through an application process, CMS and CCHS were selected for this initiative, which is funded by the State Personnel Development Grant through the Virginia Department of Education. CLC was developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. Last academic year, a leadership team of teachers spent time exploring data and making plans for implementation based on that data. Over the summer, several teachers and principals attended a CLC academy at James Madison University to work on a professional development plan specific to their school.

Where are we now?

Students and teachers are in the Early Implementation Phase of the CLC. The professional development plan developed over the summer includes additional strategies for independent student use and classroom routines based on the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning’s Strategic Instruction Model® (SIM). SIM is designed to promote effective teaching and learning of critical content. Teachers selected the Unit Organizer Routine and Framing Routine as classroom routines and the Inference Strategy for students’ independent use in reading content material.
The Unit Organizer Routine offers students a chance to see the important concepts to be discussed in the unit of study, a schedule of important upcoming assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests, self-test questions, and how the current unit is related to the course overall. The Framing Routine explores text, topics and details and increases an understanding of relationship between concepts. Both Content Enhancement Routines prompt the use of 21st Century Learning, higher order thinking skills, organization and study techniques
.

What’s next?

All members of the school community are involved in a dialogue around literacy, including the complex literacy demands in middle and high school. As we continue in the process, we are looking forward to soliciting parent and student involvement. We encourage parents and students who would like to know more information to contact Mr. Dietz, principal, or Mrs. Washburn, CLC Coordinator, at CCHS.

Over the past several years, resources have been provided to elementary schools to improve literacy and those investments have paid off as shown by higher scores for fourth graders on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).1 Similar resources are now being provided at the secondary level and we, students and teachers at Culpeper Middle School and Culpeper County High School, are the proud recipients of the Content Literacy Continuum® (CLC) initiative. Through an application process, CMS and CCHS were selected for this initiative, which is funded by the State Personnel Development Grant through the Virginia Department of Education. CLC was developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning.
