Dear Sophomore,

 

Summer is right around the corner. Your vacation is a great opportunity for you to explore lots of interests -- and consider all your options for ways to spend your summer. 

 

 

EXPLORE YOUR INTERESTS

There are many opportunities open to you this summer. While some interests can be explored in your hometown, others may require looking further away. Don't limit yourself in your search. Start by making a list of your strengths and interests; include any goals you may have for the summer, such as learning more about a profession that interests you or improving a skill. Next, brainstorm activities or jobs that relate to your interests and goals. Be sure to talk to your family, friends, relatives and teachers to see if they know of any opportunities that might suit you.

TIP OF THE MONTH: DO YOU NEED A DEGREE?

Question: What do the following jobs have in common -- registered nurse, FBI agent, secondary school teacher, hotel manager, engineer, journalist and architect?

 

Answer: They all require a college degree. If you've got a career in mind, find out what kind of education you need to pursue, and how you can prepare.

MAKE YOUR SUMMER COUNT

Colleges see meaningful summer activities as a demonstration of commitment and responsibility. Think about how you can make your summer count. Make an appointment with your counselor to discuss all your possibilities. Consider attending a summer school program to help you improve your skills and knowledge, and to:

* Pursue your interests.

* Gain experience outside the classroom.

* Try college work.
