boulder - a large rock worn away by water and weather
hollered - cried loudly or shouted
horizon - the line where earth and sky seem to meet
rhythm - any movement with regular repetition of a beat or accent
shivered - shook with cold, fear, or excitement
tunnel - an underground passage

"Marven of the Great North Woods"
cord - a unit of measurement for cut wood
depot - a railroad or bus station
grizzly - a large fierce bear of North America
snowshoe - shoes with wooden frames and strips of leather stretched across

"On the Pampas"
brand - mark by burning skin with a hot iron
bridles - part of harness that fits on horse's head
calves - young cows or bulls
corral - where horses are kept
herd - a group of animals of one kind
initials - first letters of names
manes - hair on horses' necks
reins - straps fastened to the bridle

"The Storm"
accident - something harmful or unlucky that happens unexpectedly
coaxed - persuaded gently
nuzzled - rubbed with the nose
soothing - calming; comforting
tornado - violent and destructive whirlwind
wail - a sound that is like a long, loud cry
