"from The Cricket in Times Square"

    chirp - short, sharp sound made by a cricket
    furiously - quickly, wildly
    melody - a succession of single tones in music
    occasion - a special event
    railroad - track with steel rails that trains travel on
    subway - underground electric railway
    traffic - coming and going along a way of travel
    venturing - daring to go




"A Big-City Dream"

    blisters - sores on the skin
    catalog - a list with pictures and prices
    celebrate - observe a special time with festivities
    impressed - influenced deeply
    padlock - a lock that can be put on and removed




"I Love Guinea Pigs"

    boars - male pigs or hogs
    fond - loving or liking
    gnawing - biting and wearing away
    sow - fully-grown female pig
    varieties - different kinds, types, sorts




"The Swimming Hole"

    bristled - made one's hair stand up straight
    dugout - shelter formed by digging a hole into a hillside
    jointed - having joints or places where two parts join together
    naughty - not well-behaved
    punish - discipline
    rushes - grasslike plants with hollow stems
    shallow - not deep



"Komodo Dragons"

    armor - covering worn to protect the body in fighting
    fierce - savage; wild
    harshest - roughest
    lizards - reptiles somewhat like snakes, but with four legs and thicker bodies
    prey - an animal hunted for food
    reptiles - one group of cold-blooded animals with backbones and lungs
    roam - wander
