What's
Going On in Mrs. Hammersley's 4th Grade
Welcome to my 4th grade
classroom. Here is
some information that you might find helpful.
Email
- my email address is phammers@culpeperschools.org
. If you need to get in touch with me, feel free to use it. If you provide
me with your email address, I will email you whenever I add something new to the
website.
Agenda
- please sign your child's agenda every night. Please encourage your child to write neatly.
Homework
- the students will have homework Monday - Thursday. Homework is updated everyday on the classroom website.
Birthdays
- we celebrate birthdays at school. If you would like to provide cookies,
cupcakes, popsicles, etc. , please make arrangements with me ahead of time.
Blue
Folders - a folder of papers will be sent home every Tuesday. Please
look over papers, sign the folder, and return the folder with all of the
papers to school the next day.
Progress
Sheet - there is a Weekly Progress Sheet with the Blue Folder
with a checklist of your child's work and social habits for that week. Please
sign this sheet.
Traffic
Light Report - classroom management. There is a "traffic light" poster on the chalkboard with three colored sections on it. If a student is spoken to a 2nd or 3rd time, he/she has to write their name under the green. If I have to speak again the same day, they have to write their name under the yellow and a Traffic Light Report will be sent home to be signed by a parent. If a name reaches the red area, it will result in lunch at the Silent Lunch Table.
Vocabulary
- The students will be given a list of vocabulary words every week that they are
to keep in their Language Arts Notebook. I also have them posted on my website. These
words come from the story we are reading in their textbook that week.
There will be a matching vocabulary test every Friday. At the end of each unit,
there is a test on all of the words. There is usually one written homework assignment each week. Students will have a Virginia SOL Reading Test in the spring.
Spelling
- The students have 20 spelling words every week. The list of words is in
their Language Arts Notebook and on my website. There will be a test on Friday. There will be at least two written homework assignments each week. Words need to be written in cursive.
Books
to Read - The students will go to the library twice a week and
check out two books on one of those visits. One of these books should be a chapter book. They should keep a list in their Language Arts Notebook of books they read each month. I
don't set a certain limit, but they are expected to read the library books
they check out and they are expected to make the AR (Accelerated Reader) goal.
Math
- students will have math homework three to four times a week. We do a lot of
daily review in class. Your child needs to know the multiplication facts. Students will have a Virginia SOL Math Test in the spring.
 Science
- the students have a separate Science Folder for each nine weeks. All of their notes are kept here.
All tests will come from these notes and I always tell the students key
information to highlight.
 Social
Studies - the students have a separate Virginia Studies/Social Studies Folder for each nine weeks. All of
their notes are kept here. All of the tests will come
from these notes and these folders are very important because of the Virginia
Studies SOL Test in the spring. Students should review the
notes often.
Handwriting - students are expected to write in cursive at all times.
