Mrs. Hammersley's 4th Grade
Accelerated
Reader
We use a reading program at Farmington called Accelerated Reader (AR). It is a program designed to ensure a successful and positive reading experience for students and to improve reading skills. It measures comprehension and encourages students to read.
The way it works is a student chooses a book on his or her reading level and reads it. After they read the book, they take a comprehension test on the computer. They get immediate constructive feedback on how well they did on the test. A printout tells them the score they made, how many points they earned and congratulates them if they passed the test. If they don't pass the test, they are encouraged to keep trying. Each student has a folder to keep these papers and a list of the books they have read.
There are over 1,500 books
in the library right now that have Accelerated Reader tests.
Also, if the student has read a book at home or in our classroom that's on the
list, they can take a test at any time. I have a list of books for which there
are tests available.
Students are not allowed to take a test on a movie
that they have seen. They have to have actually read the book.
Color
and Number Codes
In the library the books are color coded with dots according to reading level and several colored-coded charts are displayed around the library. They students can tell by the color of the dot what grade level the book is and also how many points they can earn if they successfully pass the test.
