Transportation

(540) 825-5446

Culpeper’s school buses travel more than 500,000 miles every year – almost 3,000 miles per day!

Each year, the transportation staff plots out the bus routes with the goals of efficiency and convenience. Our primary goal is the safe pickup and delivery of students to and from school each day. We also run buses for field trips, athletic trips, and provide for the inspection and maintenance of all school division vehicles.

Transportation Task Force
Draft Recommendation to Culpeper County School Board
January 4, 2008

Two changes beginning in the 2008/2009 school provided important background for Transportation Task Force consideration in their recommendation:

1) The new six elementary school boundaries, created by the Redistricting Task Force to specifically to minimize travel distance and time to the greatest extent possible and

2) The planned transition to two high schools, which focuses on restructuring the high school learning experience, and includes the addition of a 25-27 minute advisory period during the high school day that will also provide time for student transportation to programs of choice at either high school. The advisory period would also be implemented at Culpeper Middle School to align the CMS and FT Binns programs and schedules, and to provide the enrichment time for all middle school students.

With these factors in place, the Transportation Task Force recommends that CCPS continue the current school start time configuration (secondary starts first, elementary second and elementary dismisses first, secondary second) with the addition of specific logistical and management changes to reduce travel and wait time.

Recommended logistical and management changes, instituted by CCPS Transportation and implemented by school administrators, will reduce wait time significantly and include:

– Buses would not arrive or drop off students in the morning before their prescribed time.
– As the result of the additional 25-27 minutes to the high school schedule, alleviate 13 of the 17 double high school runs by either following an elementary run instead of two secondary runs or doing away with double runs and creating completely separate runs
– Elementary schools will load buses at dismissal in a more time-efficient manner.
– Coordinate routes/runs and times between Floyd T. Binns and Eastern View for most efficient manner of student transportation
– Add drivers as necessary to accomplish the above
