Governor's school

Mountain Vista Governor's School (MVGS) is a regional school that will engage students in extended learning opportunities patterned after the activities of scholars, scientists, and other professionals.  It is structured so that students can maintain a connection with their home high school, allowing students to have a full high school experience.

The mission of the Mountain Vista Governor’s School is to present a research-based technology-enhanced, integrated program in mathematics, science, and the humanities.  The program will challenge students to reach their full potential as independent thinkers capable of assuming leadership roles in a constantly changing global society.

Mountain Vista opened in the fall of 2006 for eleventh and twelfth graders in the school divisions of Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Frederick, Rappahannock, Warren, and the City of Winchester.  Mountain Vista is located on two campuses of Lord Fairfax Community College, Middletown and Fauquier.  The campuses are connected via video-conferencing that provides two-way interaction.

MVGS serves qualifying students in 11th and 12th grades beginning with the 2006-07 school year.  In subsequent years, it could also serve students in 10th and 9th grades.  Students will have the opportunity to earn 20 or more college credits each year through Advanced Placement exams and/or by receiving dual enrollment credits.

naglieri Nonverbal ability Test

The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test will be administered to all  Kindergarten students during the second semester of the school year.   The feedback from this test will be used to screen students for possible evaluation for the gifted program.  Moreover, the feedback from this test, combined with other assessment data, may be used to monitor and adjust instruction.

The Naglieri was designed to provide a brief but highly reliable and valid nonverbal evaluation of general ability.  To ensure that the measures would be appropriate for students from many backgrounds, the content of the test is completely nonverbal, and instructions are very brief and the questions can be solved using only the information presented in each diagram.  Therefore, word knowledge, mathematics, and reading skills are not involved in the NNAT, instead the items are figural matrices.  This method of measuring ability (without involving questions with verbal, math, or reading skills and with minimal motor requirements) allows for a fair evaluation of ability for children from different cultural and linguistic groups and those with motor or communication problems.

The NNAT is intended to be used to measure general ability nonverbally for children ages 5-17 years to predict achievement.  Emphasis is placed on fair assessment of children from diverse populations.  (Information from Jack A. Naglieri, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, George Mason University)

Third Grade Re-evaluations

It isn't too early to begin thinking about third grade re-evaluations.  All identified third grade TAP students are re-evaluated to determine identification/placement in ACE (Academically Challenging Education) in the Spring.

This re-evaluation consists of the following:

  1. Portfolio (2 items from home)

  2. Parent Survey

  3. Professional Report

  4. Interview/Observation

  5. Grades

  6. Stanford 10

  7. OLSAT: Otis-Lennon School Ability Test

  8. Alternate Test:  Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test

The most difficult part of this process is selecting portfolio items.   Check out your child's Mind Movers Calendars each month; you might find something to spark your child's interest or a great topic for a creative writing assignment.  Letters will be sent home with your child sometime in February.  Prompt return of permission forms will ensure your child will have adequate time for testing.
